I've recently purchased a Lexicon Omega with Cubase LE and a Yahama 225 portable "piano" which has only a USB connection to midi and running it directly to my computer. I am using the keyboard's sound for the voices.

I can listen to the MIDI recording from my computer speakers - hooked up to my computer running through the computer sound card and it sounds like crap.

I can also run the MIDI playback through my keyboard and it sounds like the instrument on the keyboard and sounds good.

I imagine this has something to do when the sound card gets hold of the information from my keyboard and it cant reproduce it correctly...

For best MIDI sound is it
better to buy software/sounds for my computer with a MIDI controller(suggest brand?)

If I use a synth hooked up to cubase am I going to have the same problem..

Thanks

The "crap" midi sounds you are hearing are (probably) the 8K of sounds built into your soundcard (a 1970's standard!!)

Those sounds can be replaced with anything using software, which is how the big recording studios and artists do it.

Here's a quick guide:
