View Full Version : Please help with MB and CPU choice
I am building a new DAW, and need help choosing a MB and CPU?
I'm not sure if I should go AMD or Intel. I've always used Intel processors and Asus motherboards in the past, but I have no idea what to buy now, since this will be my first new system in like 6 years. lol
The Intel Pentium D 930 3.0GHz Dual-Core, and AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ 2.0GHz CPU's are in my price range.
BTW, I'll be running a Delta 1010, my old WindowsXP Home Ed (32 bit as far as I know), and M-Powered software.
Thanks

As said in one of your earlier post which is now messing for whatever reason
Intel E6300 or E6600 depending on your budget
Asus P5B-Deluxe
2x1GB of DDR2 667

Between those two the X2 is the better call, but if you can, try and get the Core 2 Duo. Nagal speaks words of wisdom.

I am only saying what you have already said before :)

Thanks, but that's little out of my budget right now. My last project was done on a P3, so anything I get is gonna be a huge jump in performance. lol What would you choose between the 2 cpu's I listed above?

Between the two listed its the AMD hands down like itsplayed said. I had a a 4200+ and really liked it.

I'll need a MB to go with the AMD then. I was looking at this one...

but maybe there's a better one that's in the same price range. Here's the list that I can choose from

I'm not sure if chipset matters anymore.
Thanks for the help BTW!
Which chipset works well with on an AM2 (ADM dual core) board guys?
Thanks

I have both sorta -I no longer use the AMD 3200, as it craps out quite often with my Sonar 5 rig, So I was looking at the 6300's but heard they get quite hot, So for economics, I run a Pent. 4 (D) 3.4 GZ with an intel D101Ggc socket 775board, using a Gforce FX video card. No problems whatsoever running ACID and Sonar Simultaenously.

As much as I believe the X2 is a better chip than the Pentium D, I think you may be better served in getting a MoBo that can support both the Pentium D and Core 2 Duo....then, in the future, just drop in the Core 2 Duo when you can afford to do so.

AMD build on hold. Looking into Intel again. lol
itsplayed, pm sent.:)
itsplayed, your message box is full so, I'll ask you the question here.:)
I was going to go the AMD route, but considering my price range, and your advice, I guess I should look into a Pentium D build.
I plan to buy the computer from www.robotnik.ca since they're located only a few hours away from me, and seem to have some of the cheapest prices in Canada.
I spent a long time reserching my first 2 DAW's, but I'm so behind the times now when it comes to tech. stuff. Just wondering if you could help me out please.
This is what I've narrowed it down to so far.
Intel Pentium D 805 2.6GHz Dual-Core / 2 x 1MB L2 Cache / 533MHz FSB / Socket 775 / 64-Bit
Asus P5B Socket 775 Motherboard
2 Seagate Barracuda / 80GB / SATA/300 / 8MB / 7200RPM / Hard Drives
LG GSA-H22N 18x Dual Layer Black DVD Burner
Asus GeForce 7300 LE / 128MB DDR2 / VGA & DVI / HDTV-Out / PCI Express / Video Card
I'll still need a case and power supply (not too noisy I hope), and RAM. What should I choose, considering whats available from the store?
I hope you can help me out.
Thanks
Here's one of my most recent recordings. Yes, we just finger-synk'd to the CD. LOL

You can get the Core 2 Duo E4300 for about $10 more than the Pentium D.

That's about $30 more than AMD.
I just put an E6600 on an Asus P5N E-SLI board. The great part about it is that the board will also take a Quad core chip so in a couple of years I could upgrade with out getting a whole new system.
As far as a case and power supply check this out:
Antec P150 Quiet pc (http://www.antec.com/Detail.bok?no=460)
I just picked one of these up from there B-stock site and I can't find a single blemish on it. It's very quiet. The loudest thing in it is my DVD drive (which just Sh1t the bed last night so I ordered the same one your looking at, the LG)
P.S. are the prices on that site Canadian or US dollars. My E6600 from NewEgg was $100 less than on that site (and with free shipping as well)
P.P.S. I watched your YouTube vid. Very Nice!

That looks like a sweet deal for the DUO. I also like the fact that your MB supports the quad. That is a monster of a cpu man. Can't wait till the price comes down. I am running my AMD X2 4200 still but have been itching to get a duo. I know I will have to get a better video card as well; that is where the money always goes. I always tell myself I am just going to make a DAW with no games or anything else, but it's just to hard to resist.
All that power with no games... it's just not right.
My main concern is that the MB has very good USB and Firewire support.
My current MB Abit Ultra N had some junk USB drivers. The BIOS update actually made it worse, so I had to go back to an older BIOS.
I am not thrilled with Abit after this. i may try out that Asus MB.
You have not had any issues with the firewire or USB have you?
Thanks.

Not sure about the USB/Firewire. I've never used Firewire and only used the USB for a Maxtor 100gig usb hard drive. That seems to work with out any problems, but I don't use any kind of USB audio interface.
