I am listening to an audio book playing on Windows Media Player. It is in a 3rd party format which cannot be burned to a CD.

Is there any way I can rip the actual audio playing on my laptop?

Thanks

I have used Total Recorder for situations like this to capture the output of my soundcard and create a new .wav file of the audio. It works great for capturing streaming audio from the net, too.

With an on-board soundcard (built-in or PCI) it is generally possible to record audio playing in another application bu proper settings of the soundcard mixer. Specialized applications such as Total Recorder and Virtual Audio Cables also work but should not be necessary on a laptop, unless you are using an external soundcard.

In the case of a built-in soundcard, the mixer will be the Windows mixer. The correct setting is found on the recording section of the Windows mixer (the playback section is generally displayed by default). Labels vary but the correct "input" if often called something along the line of 'what you hear.' First set the mixer correctly, then select the soundcard input in a recording program.

I ended up downloading a freeware called Audacity.

It records through the stereo mixer, basically records any sound that is playing on my laptop, it does a great job. It can also edit/cut audio files including MP3s... fantastic!
