I purchased a Fostex VF-16, for the purpose of location recording, in order to be able to record my band with individual instruments on individual tracks; & then to move those tracks to Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 for editing (I want to place Track 1 from the VF-16 onto Track 1 of Cakewalk, Track 2 onto Track 2; & so on). The VF-16's outputs are: Line & Optical SP/DIF. I intend on upgrading my computer's Interface to a SoundBlaster Live! Drive IR, which will give me Optical SP/DIF input. I now have 2 considerations that I am not quite sure on how to proceed: transfer & synchronization. 1st, how do I setup Cakewalk to receive digital data save from the VF-16? Their instructions setup the save, have you start the secondary recording device (in this case, Cakewalk); & then start the save process from the VF-16. For SP/DIF, the VF-16 transfers 8 tracks in datablocks of 2 at a time, which is fine. How can I then setup Cakewalk to receive each track separately? Do I arm & record all the inputting tracks at once? Also: Is Optical SP/DIF provide a cleaner signal that Line In/Out? Is there degredation in transfering a converted audio signal as opposed to a digital transfer? My second problem is: How do I sync the transfer so that all tracks start at precisely the same time in Cakewalk? Their instructions say to use MTC (VF-16 as the Master & the Sequencer as Slave). The VF-16 also transmits a pilot signal for locating starting points for tape. Would that work for hard disk as well? I really need help with this. Thanks.
