I'm using cool edit to record my guitar. I just use a mic. It used to work fine last year, but when we got our new computer it got screwed up. I've been looking all over the internet for info on what to set the audio device and such, but it isn't working? Help would be greatly appreciated! THanks

So your recording now has a spiral shape? Is it tapered or more like a machine screw?

All you said is that something has changed. You've given not even a vague hint about just what has changed, how it has changed, or what is displeasing about it to you. You can't expect someone to make a mystical connection to your computer in order to figure out what you so far seem unwilling to discuss.

Specifics and details are necessary if you hope to receive any useful information in return. These should cover step by step what you are doing, detail by detail what your signal chain consists of, realistic information about what isn't right with the recordings, and what you've done so far to try and get it right..

Sorry Sorry i guess you were right. All i can say though is that when i plug my mic into the front input (the pink mic hole) and change the audio device recording so that it says recording, i can't get a signal. It makes a noise when i plug the mic in, but when i talk no sound comes through the speakers.

Not sure if this is helpful, but in a preferences window there should be a audio hardware setting to select. You need to make sure the setting is selected for your soundcard driver. If its your internal soundcard that your computer comes with it should already be selected but it possibly may not be. Hope that helps

Soundcards have mixer software. If yours is a built-into-the -motherboard type, or a gaming type such as those from Creative, it uses the Windows Mixer, which may be on the task bar under some label such as "volume adjust." The wrong settings (wrong for your purpose) in the mixer will prevent the incoming audio from reaching the recording program. This thread gives instruction for setting the Windows mixer:

You must either register or log in as a guest to read the thread.

For professional and semi-pro cards, the mixer is supplied by the manufacturer. There are many variations and you must look to the manual or the manufacturer website for any necessary settings.

These cards will frequently have multiple recording device selections in CoolEdit. You may have to adjust the mixer settings. You will certainly have to select the correct (for your purpose) device in CoolEdit's settings.

Try pluging any other source (i.e. a CD player or a tape player) into the line-in (not the microphone input) and see if you can record from that (with the correct mixer and program settings. If so, you know everything isn't broken. If that works but your microphone does not, maybe something has gone wrong there, such as a short in the cable.

You typically can't monitor the input on Cool Edit. It doesn't provide monitoring of the input signal. Your sound card may not provide monitoring either. You need to make sure the inputs, outputs, etc. are all set properly in the Cool Edit "settings" section under "Options".. and try it.

Are you seeing a signal being recorded in Cool Edit? When you set the input device to your microphone input of your sound card, you should see a signal on the meters of Cool Edit.. If not, right click the meters and select "monitor input" and see if you have a signal getting to the software.

What you do is record your part and then listen back through your sound card and your speakers to see how it sounds.

You should have your Windows "Multimedia" section in the control panel set up with the same devices for recording and playback as you do in Cool Edit.
