Pretty much impossible. Ever listen to a live Beatles recording? You can hardlyhear the band over the volume of the crowd.

Not much you can do to take out audio that is imbedded in the file since removing it would also remove those same frequencies in the audio portion.

Stop believing TV and movies.

You cannot separate elements in a recording (unless you have original separate tracks.)

You can use surgical EQ on specific frequencies, but you cannot separate out and remove broad-spectrum noises from "behind" anything....

Thank you for your answers...which program do you recommend for surgical EQ? I have sound forge 8. Am I able to do it with this SW?

You need a parametric equalizer. Many audio editors have them; a variety of plug-ins are available to work with many editors. Using one will require quite a bit of practice, time, and effort. You have to identify the particular frequency you want to remove (mostly by trial and error), then apply high q filtering around that specific frequency. Most likely you will have to do this for quite a few different frequencies. As already indicated, this is unlikely to be highly satisfactory because there is no way to do this without some effect on the music you want to keep.

Both SoundForge8 (which I use) and it's rival Wavelab are the two big PC audio editors. Not much you can't do with either of them; both are very very powerfull.

**NOTE: They are for editing mono and stereo files only. They will not work on multiple tracks.****

There are plenty of EQ tools in SF8 and since its VST compatible now, you can add any EQ or other plugin into it you want....

ohh.
I have been playing with the newest Audition, in edit view/ spectral view, you can cut and paste portions of the waveform by hand. The graphical view shows amplitude/frequency which is way helpful for seeing extraneous noise.

There are several programs out there, ranging from simple and cheap to incredibly complex and expensive, that will remove certain types of noise from recorded audio. They work best to remove artificial noise - things like pops, clicks, crackles, etc.

But some of them will also do a decent job with more complex noises. Almost any periodic, repeating noise source can be removed, or at least greatly reduced, using the right software. Examples of such a noise would be a ground loop hum, a buzz from a guitar amp, or even an electric motor from an HVAC unit accidentally picked up by a microphone.

Software of this type won't do much of anything for crowd noise, barking dogs, and other non-repeating sounds, though. For that, surgical EQ and very painstaking editing using the pencil tool and volume automation in your DAW software is your best bet.

... then you package and market it as "My Band, Live!!! At Shea Stadium"...
