I'm on a roll tonight peeps. another thing that's been on my mind alot and I've already posted on this topic before, so please forgive me, is what is 'the best' portable recording system for the money, and I stress 'portable', as I do not want to be carrying around a clunky recorder, mixer, mics preamps and all the other misc. stuff I could easily saddle myself with. First of all I would want to be able to record in 'the field' and be able to incorporate what I record into a later recording done on a more professional system. Why do I want to do that? Well, here's my problem: I have many friends and family members that I will probably never be able to get into a real studio to do their parts which I would like to incorporate into a cd project sometime in the future, so I see the portable recorder idea as the only feasable way to do this. What kinds of systems are you familiar with that would help me accomplish this goal and what peripheral devices such as one or two good mics, maybe a small preamp and small digital or analog mixer? Keep in mind that some of these 'impromptu' recordings would probably be done in someones house on occasion, what kinds of advice can you give me for managing the environment in those cases? Should I go for the dryest sound possible? And yes, I am a "newbie" in every sense of the word, but I love learning this stuff and I'm always open to new ideas and opinions, thanks again you all. BTW, in your equipment suggestions don't worry about budget, but if you could give me several budget/equipment options from 1 to 5 grand that would be great. Thanks again for all your help and input.

Jed - I would try narrowing down your questions a bit to get more answers. Someone could write a book on what you asked in this post!

Most portable, least clunky, 'good enough' sound - go minidisc. I did and it works great!
