I am looking for the best software to transfer vinyl, cassette, 8 track, reel to reel, whatever to compact disk.

Is there anyone else doing this?

are there applications that can do this in one clean sweep while cleaning up (denoising) and separating tracks?

currently, I have SONAR 5 producer and Vegas video 4.
I am looking at sound forge 8 and samplitude.

any suggestions would be very helpful.

For sure Sound Forge 8 includes restoration tool. But it doesn't always cleans sound correctly. I do use Waves Restoration Bundle within Sound Forge for this goals. As for me, result sounds better. Controls are easier and more flexible.
Anyway Sound Forge - is best audio editor!

There are certainly tens of thousands of people transferring old media to CD, possibly milllions of people. There are products that automate most of the process (e.g. PC Cleaning Lab) but they cannot give you the quality results possible with more hands-on approaches.

I don't know the relative prices, but Audition has much better audio cleanup tools than Soundforge (aside from really being a better program all around). However, the Sonic Foundry Noise Reduction 2 DX plugin is quite good. It can be used within either program, and probably with quite a few other editors.

Transfers at this time, are my "main" business, if you will (since I can't find much of anything else steady)... I've used Magix Audio Cleaning Lab (several versions), Cool Edit Pro (2 versions), Audacity, WaveLab (Lite & "regular" v?), Cubase VST 5.1, Cubase LE, Sonar LE, & Samplitude v8 SE.

The Magix ACL is "quick & dirty" (literally...). You can get fast results, but not always what you want... All of the others have to be tweaked, as do the "plugs" you use. For the most part anymore, I record into WaveLab Lite (I no longer own a copy of "regular" WaveLab - got too expensive...) and try a few tweaks in it. Then, I might go into Cubase or Audacity, dependant upon what I want to do. I'm getting to where I'm liking using Samplitude SE, and I'm getting used to its "layout". I very seldom use my Cool Edit Pro anymore, since the DX plugs are more difficult to adjust, and seem to degrade the audio quality (it's v1.1 or .2?). What I want to do is get WaveLab vTheLatestGreatest, but my sons don't like the thought of being sold into slavery...

From what I've "discovered" (this is very similar to the "live" recording situation...), get it transferred correctly & cleanly as possible, and life on the processing side is easier... I have used 96k at 24-bit, but I can't hear any difference between that and 48k at 24-bit (I do not have good monitoring...). The "quality" of the plugs used, and their useage & settings would be the next factors.

yea, i just got me a copy of audition 2.0

I plan on doing transfers for $ also.

There seems to be quite a need for the service where i live.

mostly old weddings on VHS, people are looking to move them to DVD.

Exactly what I find here is middle-US. I've even had someone come to me with Super 8 projector film, wanting to transfer to DVD. I just so happen to have a projector and a transfer box (shoot the projector into the box, mirror bounces the light around, shoot a cam in the other side, and it "transfers" to video, then via firewire to computer... "dirty", but it works...). Added a "soundtrack" of canned music (royalty-free...) and they *loved* it. Unfortunately, it was "family", and was done as part of a couple's wedding anniversary present... so, other than "experience", there was no "compensation" for said service. Seems to happen much too often... lol "Oh, your cousin does that, and probably for *free*, also..." I'm going to have to "soak" someone, then maybe it'll slow to a crawl... But then, what'll I do for business??? lolol
