Please, what is a DAW?

I need initiating ... what is a digital audio workstation? Is it something other than a Mac or PC set up for, and dedicated to, audio work?

In this forum, it is the stand alone systems developed by Roland, Korg, Akai, Yamaha etc which usually include a mixer, effects and multi-track recorder. They can be "all in one" workstations which allow you to do everything from record to mix down to final stereo (and in some cases burn your finished CD).
