View Full Version : proposed studio layout
Here is the plan view of my basement/studio with two locations where the workstation may go. Anyone see that one location may be preferrable to the other, or acoustic treatment suggestions?

How much are you planning on building out?
I would orient my main mixing area on the left wall where the drums are, so that the monitors are firing towards the door. and use the area where the second DAW is for the drum tracking area.

I must be missing something here Phil, I don't see a plan/drawing?
How much are you planning on building out?
That will be it as far as construction, so there won't be any walls built to separate the space(if that's what you meant).
and use the area where the second DAW is for the drum tracking area.
So to create as much separation as possible?
I don't see a plan/drawing?
Sorry 87, do you mean you are not receiving the attachment?

When I get a chance this weekend or maybe tonight, I'll overlay what I mean on your drawing.

Are you deadset on no more construction? That utility room is where I'd build a drum room.
With a 20 x 23 space you may want to think about 2 or more spaces: at least one for tracking and one for mixing.
Perhaps my floor plan will inspire ya...

Thanks dc.

Yeah Shane, I would love to section off the space like you've done, but I don't plan on being in this house too much longer so I don't want to go all out. I also have to make it uncramped and aesthetically pleasing for my lady;) .

Cool, then what DC said is the way to go. Get your DAW as far away from early reflections as possible. Hope your ceiling isn't too low. That can color your sound.

Here's one way you might set it up.
This way you get your speakers fireing the long way, you'll want to put some treatment on the left wall and bass bass traps in the corners.

another possibility
Ahh, now I see what you are saying. Posistion the listening enviroment so as to avoid as many reflections as possible and then treat the remainder of potential problems, correct? I like it, thanks. And thanks for the cool couch as well:cool: .

hey phil I got the layouts, I like the second one dc suggested, keeping the drum area by the stairs away from the mix console. one other suggestion since you don't want to do any partition work in the space is build a couple (2) GOBOS I use them in my studio and they work real well in getting some sound seperation especially around drums. I built mine out of 2X4 framing, covered with mahogany (floor)underlayment, stuff with some corning fiber glass batts (701?ithink) and seal all inside edges real good, 4'X6'size with some legs and wheels to move around, paint to match decor, plus when ya move you can take them with you. I have a seperate drum room, but some bands like to record live and gobos help out alot in this situation.

Thanks for the suggestion. I had thought of that, but I don't think I would track more than one instrument at a time. However, I was wondering, besides being helpful with isolation, could mobile partitioning be useful for tracking, ie creating different room sizes or deadening the area immediatly surrounding the drums, amps, etc.?
Thanks for the help fellas.

yep Vulcan....that's where I got my original plans for my gobos, back when they were just starting Real Trapps, Ethan had (has) plans for the gobos', its been along time, so dunno if they are still there. spam I have found them very effective isolating amps, and drums from the recordings, there is of course bleed through, but nothing like with-out them. The real trapps are very nice units, may consider them.
Thanks for the link vulcan, and thanks much to everyone else. All suggestions will be submitted for consideration:D .
Right now I'm humpin' away in the basement...framing 90% done, then run electric (all on new, separate circuit breakers), then finish the floor, then sheetrock, then ceiling, so on and so forth. By my estimate I should be ready to set up shop in 2-3 weeks if all goes according to plan...but we all know how that is.
I'm sure I'll be keeping this thread alive as the days/weeks progress. If anyone comes up with more suggestions, please let me know. Peace.

AC! You must do the AC now or you'll be opening walls later.
Ahh, AC... forgot to mention that was done! Thanks Shane.

2 to 3 weeks - hell I've been working on my basement (1700 Sq Ft) for two years now. The 9x7 vocal room has been since april and Im at least two weeks out on that!

Well dc, I've got nothing but free time on my hands right now. I am a carpenter by trade and have been doing many facets of construction for 21 years. For the last 7 years I have been building exhibits for the trade show industry, and while the business is not necessarily seasonal, it does slow down in the summer months, and I typically get about 3 months off with unemployment benefits  . Not to many people get to plan on not working, so I use the time to tackle larger projects (fun or otherwise).
Plus I imagine you are building with more of an effort towards quality studio construction, where as I'm just trying to finish a basement, and then tweak it a little towards a studio environment.
If I'm layed off much longer you can hire me.

Actually the basement is just to get finished - the problem I have is the 21yo kid who i bought the house from fancied himself a carpenter, got permits, got the 4 in 1 inspection done and didn't use the space well at all. Rooms too small, poor design for running electrical, and poor window framing. I also suspect based on a few things i have contractors look at - the inspector probably looked the other way or got paid off. So much of my time is re building walls and changing the layout

well spam I hope you get your studio set-up the way you want it, and it especially sounds good. Keep me in mind, we are going to move, bought another house and its got a huge barn with concrete floors, and....I'm dismantling everything for the move, plus the framing that was done for add on main room....man. Maybe this will be it...forever! Good luck

Well I finished the framing yesterday, so I'll clean up some (the room and myself) and see if I get some pictures up!
Hey 87PRS, good luck with the move and hopefully you won't have to do it again...but it always seems to happen.:(

hey Phil ya up and running yet? Got any pics yet?
After you have a studio set-up for going on 4 years and then start taking everything down ya wonder where in the world did it all come from...its a mess but I am blessed.
Are you actually recording yet?
Waz up? :)
Hey all! I haven't had time to even look at a computer in the past few weeks, so I'm outta touch. Been called back to work:mad: , and am working 10 -12 hours a day, 1 hour commute each way, 7 days a week:eek: ! More money for more toys, he-he. I'll update as soon as I make any progress.
Hey all.
I finally got a weekend off so I'm gonna get down in that basement and finish framing (decided to finish the bathroom while I was at it) and tie up any loose ends so I can move on to the electrical and plumbing.
I did some searching around for design and construction tips and didn't run across anything particularly helpful. Can someone offer some links?
I'd like to get all the T's crossed and the I's dotted before dcwave comes over and hangs my drywall;) :D .

No way dude. I have hung my last piece of drywall for a while. I just got done priming the walls and ceiling this morning. Last night - the industrial stength texture machine - woo-weee... look out, man i got texture now in places didn't know existed!

dcwave, did ya blow that pop-corn stuff on the ceiling? How'd that work for you....? Was it kinda easy? OR more like "dry-wall" installation:(

No pop corn - this is all pupose joint compound, thinned, and put into a hopper, pump fed to a spray gun and blown with compressed air. The effect was for a thick orange peel - all I can say is - cover everything with heavy plastic that you don't want textured - including yourself and have a piece of test drywall to make sure you get the consistancy correct - too wet and you got problems.
BTW - its painted and the new track lights are installed - wifey is touching up corners and putting a second coat on two of the walls today.
New acoustic pannels by wednesday - no floor for a while - ran out of money.
Hello to all!
Progress of "studio" to date:
Just finished plumbing (bathroom) and running all new 20 amp circuits for outlets and recessed lighting. Outlets are on seperate breakers than lights, and I kinda went overkill with 3 dedicated breakers for outlets alone! Too much?
Time to make the donuts..er, I mean drywall.

Hey dc, was this for acoustic purposes or design? Would that amount of texture alter the characteristics of the room? I have access to all the nessesary equipment and would like to know why you did it, or is it "ancient chinese secret"?
TWO old commercial references in one post...ZING!!

Not for acoustic purposes at all. Mostly an orange peel texture. Did it to fit into the rest of the house's walls and hide my sloppy sanding of butt joints on the walls and ceilings.

Ok, thanks. I think I'm going to hang the drywall and hire out to have it finished. I don't have experience with taping, mudding, etc., so I'm pretty sure my work will leave a little to be desired.:o
