I'm planning to get one of these, and am wondering about the quality of the converters/pres.

I'm currently using an RME Multiface, which I really love. I'm fairly sure either of these M-Audio boxes will be a step down in terms of sound quality, but I need pres and I'm planning to get Pro Tools M-Powered.

Aside from the obvious differences in terms of number of ins/outs, how do the pres and converters compare between the 410 and the 1814?

Thanks,

Why step down? You'd be better served putting the money towards something like M-audio's Octane to interface with the Multiface.

The primary reason for the switch is to enable me to run Pro Tools.

It wouldn't be much of a step down. You'll be surprised how good these both sound. THey use the same converters and pres, so get the 1814 if you need more inputs. The 410 will only allow 2 simultaneous analog, plus Stereo s/pdif.
