sound isolation discussions

Hey all,
I am back on my studio project!
YEA!

anyway, I have a room that I am going to acoustically isolate.

the room itself is isolated from the outside world by concrete filled cinder block with a layer of fitted stone on the outside.

I am going to be using all of the techniques to make it as quiet as possible.
the only issue i am having is the fact that there are two windows in the room.

the main big picture window is 53" tall and 68 or so inches wide and is facing a street 40 feet away, although it is not that busy, it still can be problematic.

the other window is smaller double pained double hung modern vinyl window.

I was thinking about covering the smaller window with 3/4 inch acrylic on the outside to help reduce noise leakage.

as for the picture window, I was actually thinking about removing it completely and bricking it up.

but i do like the light coming in, now i have never tried this but i was wondering if anyone here has thought about using Glass Block for covering a large window.

what do you guys think?

Well sabianq, I don't know how well glass block (there's glass and acrylic) insulates as far as sound, but I know you can build an entire wall with it so a large window will be no problem construction-wise. I would think it would isolate fairly well...certainly better than a typical window.

the STC of glass block is 35-40 which is way better than just glass (29)

I really like the idea of using glass block now.

if i put up a thick curtain on the inside, then acoustic reflection can be tamed as well.

I have to wonder what the STC of lexan is.

a layer of 1/2 inch lexan over the glass block should equal the concrete cinder-block and stone wall.

I calculate the STC of the actual structural wall to be about 56 STC.

this is based on the fact that the structure is built with cinder block filled with concrete, a 2 inch air gap then 5 - 6 inches of natural stone set in concrete.

when i eventually wall off the inside with staggered stud construction and two layers of fire code 5/8 inch gypsum board, the space should be quite nice.

my wife suggested i rent it out as a quiet room so people can get away from the noise of everyday city life.

hey sabian, I am all for the glass block look and light, cool stuff and it looks good in a studio environment. Probably know but, you might check out the STC on heavy drapery, its pretty good, and why they used it in the theatres. I have a wall in my studio with heavy drapes and its nice because I can open them at different widths and create reflections.

actually, its pretty small for a studio

the studio room is 14 x 10 x 8.5

and the control room is roughly 25 x 12 x 8.5

but it is only a start.

eventually, i will be working toward this
