Standalone Vocal Booth vs. Construction

OK, which is better - a standalone (ie whisperroom) vocal booth, or a dedicated constructed room aside from the main tracking room? This particular situation involves an existing square room with sheetrock walls to be converted, or to purchase the whole thing. Any help would be appreciated.

i guess it depends on your finances... a square room with sheetrock cladding might take up more funding to correct, than buying a booth.. so.. :)

www.johnlsayers.com has some info on square rooms and the resonance that it can impart on recordings... (i kinda remember reading it there... not sure if the info still exists ;) )

With a little research and hard work, I'm sure you can come up with a vocal room that is at least as effective as a Whisper Room (probably more so), and probably less expensive.

The downside, I suppose is that it's a whole lot easier to assemble a pre-fabricated booth than to frame out and build a whole room, and it's a lot easier to dismantle it and move it should you ever need to.

I just built (still finishing - floor next weekend) a "vocal" area its 9 feet by 7.9 feet. The wall with the door is angled about about 2 inches in at the dead wall. The Dead wall is 4 in of fiberglass covered with fabric then pine slats over it. The cieling is 6 in of fiberglas with pegboard. The back wall will have a built in book shelf to act as diffusor. Right now it sounds pretty even and it keeps the sound out. The outer walls are 1/2 in sheetrock on the 1st layer and 5/8th on the 2nd layer. A whisper room that size would have cost me a lot more than what I have put into it.
