The layout and price of the Projectmix I/O is pretty sweet. It is basically a Firewire 1814 built into a control surface. I've been looking for reviews of both of these units and I have been unable to find any pro reviews. The 6 user reviews I read from Harmony Central are unanimously horrible. :( I am quite surprised at this, since my impression was that M Audio Firewire series was actually pretty stable and a good value.

Can anyone share links to a good thread, or pro review of the Projectmix or the FW1814? I don't want to buy one from SOS though

I was able to locate a used Terratec Mic8+ with SPL mic pre's to use as a standalone 8channel AD/DA via lightpipe. I could use this to expand the units I/O, but if the unit is unstable... well then that just won't do!

I've got a ProjectMix I/O and can say that it is perfectly stable under Windows XP SP2, a lovely little control surface.

whew! that's good news. I wonder why the 1814 reviews are so consistantly negative? I am still considering the Projectmix - it really does offer a great value.

On a related note: I discovered recently that the Emagic Logic Control boxes can be upgraded via a chip which makes them identical to the current Mackie MCU. I think these units are even made in the USA, and you can get them used for $350-500 on a good day.
