I have been using Maddog opticals, and they ain't cuttin the mustard. They worked -now no recoginize blank cd uninstalled reinstalled makes no vas difference. woe is me
I need to burn Redbook stuff, as well as promo dvd's.
I run Cd Archetect, Sonar, Nero, (which I am just gonna dump), and Acid Pro.
It appears madddog is just too proprietary, as well as old hat for multiple daw stuff.
Ps:I am getting quite a shelf full of laser drives, any gold in 'em as I could use it for gifts :)
Stevie, wogghead , show me the errors of my ways
be good

Your welcome Bops, sounds like you made a some good choices. Just so your aware, Windows XP will burn redbook compliant audio cds—it's part of the OS.

I've been using Lite-On DVD burners on several computers to burn audio on CD, data on CDs and DVDs and video to DVDs. Absolutely ZERO problems, and they're only $40.

Get Plextor Premium drive. Having tested several brands along with several brands of CDrs, the Plextor drives have the least errors with burning. If you are really wanting to burn RED Book to send to a duplication house get the best. Don't use some budget CDr/DVDr that may or may not write C2 errors - an absolute no-no in a Red Book CD (some players will ignore C2 errors - which means some players will play the CD and other will not). PlexTools come with the Plextor burners that you can use to check the for C1 and C2 errors. I also use Tayio Yuden CD-Rs for finished pre-masters.

Redbook discs must be written Disk At Once (DAO). Not all DAO discs are Redbook. Unless WinXP can show a PQ sheet somewhere, I seriously doubt its burning a RedBook PMCD. I would also be willing to bet that anything XP burns has C1 and C2 errors above the spec (C1 < 220 per second and C2 = 0)

Here's the info about Windows XP CD burning
Windows XP uses "track-at-once,"...
To create a Redbook-format audio CD from source files in WMA, MP3, or other supported audio formats, you need simply open the folder in which you keep your music, select the files you want to copy to CD, and click the Copy to audio CD option in the Music Tasks menu (see Figure 4 above). This will open Windows Media Player, which is used to translate the files into Redbook audio and then burn them onto the CD through the image mastering API. You can also go directly to the Copy Music to CD or Portable Device tab in Windows Media Player and select songs from there.

These are NOT RedBook discs, since RedBook discs require Disk At Once Writing. Sorry if I am beating a dead horse, but I see so many factiods about CDs on so many forums. For most people none of this will matter. It WILL matter if you are going to duplicate or replicate your CDs for distrobution. :)

I stand corrected, to burn within Red Book specs, it would seem that third party software such as Nero is needed....thanks for the heads up dcwave.
I will add this info to my files for future reference.

No worries, itsplayed. Like I said - for most people, burning an audio CD probably won't make a difference - its not going to a replication plant and many CD players will ignore errors that would normally be rejected by a compliant player. :)

I' use cd architect 5 -so I suspect c1 and 2 errors will be a non-issue
Man, there is always somthing to learn, I think I am up to the 5th grade -as far as loss of brain memory storage..

Actually Bops, its the burner that usually introduces the errors. CD burners create "lands" and "pits" on the physical material. If a pit gets the angle of its slope burned incorrectly then an error will occur (note this is just one way that an error can be created).

SOOO,
I better test the 'master cd' for those errors before I send it out....
Which, I suspect very few folks do..myself included

Yes. Test. Also, most duplication places don't test either. Larger replication houses might.

Rebuild this weekend Oboy !
can't back up my chit as the maddog dvd is f-p'd up.
any rate heres what we gotz to install..
Kworld video magician pci card with breakout box, I love breakout boxes,
-(pinnicle dazzle usb just can't cut it)
anybody wants it let me know..free
Plextor PX-230A -no biggie
LG GSA-4167B DVD recorder - dvd is so fickle little wary, nero is fickle too
Planned use for the kworld card is for Video capture as well as send to dvd, as well as VCR, with audio. A second thought is to back up audio on vcr as well for redundancy. ( remember the old days when recording audio to a vcr was cool ?)
I plan on using this one machine to handle it all.
I had the notion of running peer to peer to a second backup clone machine, or, even just a dedicated video machine, to transfer audio to video production at a novice level. Have'nt thought that through yet...
Thats what I be doin, any thoughts appreciated
be good

Hey bops2000, I am new to the forum. I was curious are you running XP sp2. I am going to build a system and I am looking to buy a DVD burner. I have heard of a few stories where people that went to SP2 broke thier DVD or CD burner. One case was a brand new Plextor.

My experience is that DVD burners are fickle. Only advice I could give is check for xp compatible, look at ratings in video forums also.
I would definately build the machine first, get all the hardware, software updates first, and worry about install dvd last.
sorry for late response, i just saw it in profile...

After rebuilding my machine, and adding my FW card with the 01x, I cant play audio CDs in the Plex drive anymore - my 01x drivers die. Not a biggies, but a pain when auditioning sample CDs; so I just route windows audio to the Dakota.
I have wondered it has something to do with the SP2, well, Im due for a rebuild in about 4 months so I'll see then :)
