What's going on that you feel a reinstall is needed? Is this a recovery disk or a standard retail copy of WinXP? What computer are you using?

Indeed; we don't even know what's the problem :)

But perhaps it's time to start using Ghost or other image software from now on. That way you just make a copy of the partition in question (or the whole disk) and if you really have nasty software-related problems for some reason, just put back the image and you're done. I know xp has it's on restore options, but I prefer using a program that bypasses windows, like Ghost.

If the problem is software and not hardware, you can always start over. If the computer is at all still functional, you may want to give serious consideration to first making some kind of back-up of data and possible programs sources, if you've downloaded any -- especially if they are programs you bought over the net. If you do a full install you lose everything that is currently on that OS partition. In many cases there is only one partition, so everything currently on the machine will be gone.

For any of this, however, you have to have an OS source. That may mean buying a copy of WinXP before you can do anything. Sometimes a 'refreshable' copy of the OS comes with Dell computers. You can't do a full install with these but you can often correct problems that have originated since the original install. Do you have such a thing?
