I'd like to know if there is an LED or maybe colored LCD display , that can give me a left and right pair of output meters, that could be programmable to display the levels from ANY audio program, be it SONAR, windows media player or whatever, that will fit in the 5.25 drive bay of my rackmounted pc case....I've got a Layla 3g, and it sounds and looks great, but lacks any sort of output metering...I've toyed with the idea of hacking some sort of meters into the front of the case, but figured it would be much nicer to keep it as is, and utilize a blank 5.25 drive bay for this purpose...I've seen LCD displays from Max Orbital and others....but I'd really like to have something specifically designed for quality output metering , even peak hold bars would be very cool.... Did some internet searching , but haven't found a display like this.....anyone know of one?....

oops, the thread title should read LED or LCD!

Maybe you can get this : http://www.thomann.de/thoiw7_the_tmeter_pcm223_peakmeter_prodinfo.html#f pix? You may even put it inside a 5.25 bay yourself...

Dunno if this is could do it too: http://www.thomann.de/thoiw7_rtw_1020e_prodinfo.html

Or buy something like this : http://www.okaphone.com/artikel.asp?id=419
The page is in Dutch, but you'll get the picture I hope.
You can buy something like this at your local electronics parts shop, and put it into a 5.25 bay. Add an additional swith - if you like - to turn it on and off, and connect the analog output of the soundcard to the input of the metering system.

yea, that looks ideal....it would be cool if that came custom made into a 5.25 bracket, but it might be fun to 'customize' it into mine...my 5.25 blanks are made of metal, so it would be a challenge, tho' I could maybe hack rectangle into a plastic one and paint it to match my charcoal gray case....

I think the 'catch' for these LED kits, is most I've looked at so far require 12 volts...It would have to be a meter that could be powered by whatever my pc power supply puts out, most likely 5 volts....

well I guess I misguessed about the 5 volts...most HD's use 12 volts, and I have spare molex connectors , so supplying voltage to one of these kit LED meters is no longer an issue....just fabricating a nice looking mount job into a 5.25 blank, oh, and figuring out where to tap the audio signal off my soundcard(s) into the meter. :D

Your PSU puts out 3.3, 5 and 12 volts, your amperage should also be a concern, actually even more so.
