there is another format that just stomps all other formats
in the making for 20 years now to become available by end of year 2007
the HVD (holographic versitile disk) will wipe out the compentition even befor it hits the market.

300 gb disks with 160 MB read/write transfer rate and a 50 year data life (answer to my archiving questions)
by 2008 the company is shooting to have 1.2 terabyte disks.

I still want the Petabyte chips though!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw that and got real exicted then woke up ;)

Sadly, the best format/solution does not always win. This one I hope does make it without being overly expensive.

nagal,

You hit it on the head there. It's not all about the technology...it's about the almighty $$$. If it weren't for that, this whole DVD vs. Blue Ray thing would have been finished a long time ago. Hell, go back to VHS vs. Beta tapes. Same thing. (Yes, I'm old enough to remember those. I remember having the choice at the video store) One of the best, although unfortunate, things I've heard was from one of my teachers when I was doing my recording degree. We were lamenting on not having this or that and my teacher looked at us and said, "guys, in 10-15 years, this will all be in a landfill anyway." It was a poignant way of saying...worry about the music...not the technology.
