My partner and I currently run a MOTU 896HD with a Digimax LT to get 16 firewire channels into our laptop that runs Audition. We are looking to upgrade for a few reasons and have been eyeing up the Mackie Onyx 1640 with Firewire. I love Mackie products and have an old analog mixer that still runs great from them. I did all the research on the Onyx 1640--and while not crazy about the firewire feed being pre-fader/EQ--we can certainly live with it.
My question is, is there a better product out there under $1500? I love the idea of being able to control my software via faders (mackie or tascam controller?) but know that you cant do the actual recording with them. It is imparitive that we are able to record 16 channels and our laptop has both USB and Firewire. We know the Onyx doesnt allow control of the software via the faders, but we love the pre-amps and live mixing capabilities.
So in conclusion, can anyone recommend a 16 channel firewire mixer for under $1500 that is superior to the Mackie Onyx 1640?
