View Full Version : Repairing digital distortion on dialogue

Hallo all,

I'm editing audio for a shortie and a few parts on the dialogue are distorting. The distortion sounds like 'crackling' (if such a word exists) and is not audible for some people.
Under my suggestion, the director will re-record these bits but I'm very interested to see whether there are any tips or things I could be trying. I have already tried the FFT filter on the Audition 1.5 and even though I have managed to determin the frequency area that distorts, it doen't help reducing it. Possibly because there are various areas / harmonics?

Thanks in advance

Try this demo: http://www.algorithmix.com/home/index_downloads.htm

Perhaps this is all you need?

Thanks,

Plug-ins include a de-noiser, a de-scratcher, an EQ and a de-clicker and I think that digital distorion is beyond these.

I was refering to 'crackling'. Thanks anyway, will try the plug-ins

Unfortunately, you're right about your initial suggestion. There's really no way to get rid of digital distortion; it's just the nature of the beast. From my understanding, you are destroying the frequency information when you have severe digital clipping. EQ, denoising, etc are all just band aids to the problem. Kind of like privatizing social security in the USA. er... nevermind that!

If you're getting a couple pops and clicks, but the audio is still fairly prominent, you might have some luck with the so-called "pop- and click-removers" out there. The Sony restoration plugs are a personal favorite, albeit a bit more $$$ than most.
