Hi, I know I shouldn't be using my daw for the internet as well but I only have one computer. I've tried avg Free edition and Norton and both slowed my editing software down considerably. Especially when opening and closing projects. Can anyone recomend an anti-virus program that is very light on resources? Thanks.

I don't use any virus protection at all......clogs up the system......if I download anything, it is from a site that I trust. If I see an attachment on an e-mail even if it is from someone I know....I don't open it......Virus protection is over rated...there are new viruses every day....you can't keep up with it. Norton is probably the biggest pile of crap you can use....if you really feel the need for virus protection...then go with Mcafee!!!!

Hopefully jpw is kidding, otherwise he's going to be reformating his drive often! These programs are unobtrusive and will update themselves automatically.

ZoneAlarm - free firewall - www.zonealarm.com

AVG free Anti-Virus - www.grisoft.com

You will also want to run programs to eliminate any spyware that attaches itself to your computer (by simply visiting a webpage!) Run these at least weekly:

AdAware - http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Spybot Search and Destoy - http://spybot.info/en/download

And the BEST thing you can do is NEVER use Internet Explorer or open Microsoft Office documents on your PC (thanks Bill for all the security holes!!).

Go to mozilla.org and download Firefox web browser.

Go to openoffice.org and download the MSOffice replacement software OpenOffice.

Best of all, these solutions are absolutely FREE!

Stay away from Norton, McAfee's better but if you really need to use an anti-virus, I'd suggest going with TrendMicro. http://www.trendmicro.com/en/home/us/enterprise.htm
Internet Explorer is a major resource hog avoid using it on your DAW machine. If your using one system as an all-in-one solution, go with a dual boot setup, seperating your DAW from the internet.

Hi
It has been reported that AVG and Samplitude don't get along.

Hi... I had a simular thing happen with Samplitude and AVG.It seems that the recommended updates from a few days ago causes the app to hang 10-12 secs.before closing.I uninstalled AVG and installed this... http://www.free-av.com/
Samplitude now closes in under 1 sec. and I'm told that AntiVir is a better service than AVG(and is still free!)

I can recommend Trend too. I run it on my machine, and of all the antivirus products available on the market, Trend seems to place the very lightest load upon the machine.

Also, you may wish to try using the free FireFox web browser (http://www.mozilla.org) instead. I think it's much safer to browse with and it seems much more resistant to pop-ups, spyware infections, etc.

Seriously...I've never had a problem! But, I am on dial up, if I used a broadband connection then I most certainly would use a firewall of some sort.:)

Agreed, which is why going to a dual boot system makes sense. It's best to keep these two operation's seperate.

My firewall is made of plastic. It's a pair of removeable drive caddys, and it's cheap, highly effective, never needs updating, and never slows down my system. I simply swap out my DAW drive with my internet and other junk drive when I need to go online, play games, whatever.

That's cheap and very effecient!
I try to do the security thing like RGD whenever it's possble.

i've had to use my main machine for Internet since the death of my laptop, but fortunately no problems. I run windows firewall and a little free app called WinPatrol which you can download free from :

http://www.pcworld.com

I had zone alarm and although it's good, you will have problems with it if you dont upgrade to the full version ie, it will not uninstall.

still, the best way to keep it clean is not to use it . thats not possible for those of us with one machine (left)

i dont know about anyone else, but my biggest problem is i cant stop downloading new plugins, hundreds of the buggers. thus my main machine becomes a test bed :(
