Hey, I have a P3 866Mhz/512M system with Cubase32 a MOTU 2408 and Ultra160 Hds. I use it to transfer audio from a couple of DA-88s for mixing, it used to work well, but I get drop outs and pops in audio all the time and still have a hard time configuring. Recently I tried to use this system as a Video NLE. But that too is killing me.

A friend of mine offered to sell me a G4 500 with Cubase and Premeire6 and a ton of other apps for $2400. He says that if I want to be serious about pro audio and video production, Mac is the way to go.

I have heard good things about Macs for design and of course ProTools is huge. And now DV and firewire.

So basically I need advice, what do you all think, should I scrap the P3 system and go Mac G4? I can still use the MOTU 2408 and the Ultra160 card right?

thanks for your time.

Obviously Mac is the way to go, but for $2400 he's ripping you off. G/500 with 128 Ram cost around $1500 on Ebay, unless his software is legit copies not cracked then the price is OK. As for 2408 since it's made by Motu you'd better of with Digital Performer 3.0 which is much more stable and has better MIDI capabilities then Cubase or Logic. If your SCSI card is made by Adaptec then it won't work on Mac ( you'll need to get Adaptec Power Domain), if it's made by Initio or Atto then it might work -depends on the model. Sell your PC and SCSI card, buy lots of Ram G4/400 or 500, get Atto Dual U160 card not Adaptec and Digital Performer. That should even leave you some money for a pair of monitors if you don't have any.
