i have an acer laptop with a line-in/mic-in jack.

i want to play my guitar onto it and add effects while i play and record on something like Sound Forge.

what hardware do i need? the smaller and cheaper the better.

so far i found out about:

M-Audio Audiophile USB
http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/page/shop/flypage/product_id/1777/category_id/

and

Behringer UB502 EURORACK
http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/page/shop/flypage/product_id/1857/category_id/0272999e9b222b2aa272cc099b53fdaf

or do i need just one of them?

thanks for any help.

Get a POD v2.0 and connect that to the line in of your laptop('s soundcard)

The POD will give great sounds, and no latency during monitoring.
And it also gives you real knobs to adjust all settings like volume, gain and effects and EQ and reverb and ... and .. and ...

It'll be the only thing you need to buy.

Line6 Guitar Port is cheaper and works fine.
600mhz processor minimum.

a guy at my local music store recommended this one just the other day.

is there any latency problems with Line6 Guitar Port?

will i be able to use other software for effects (like Guitar Rig) while i play into my laptop

Not too bad latency...
very playable. It appears as if the amp is about 10ft
from your ears.

I don't think Guitar Rig + Guitar port would be a good idea...
