Hey All,

I just purchased a G4 500 (448 Mb ram, 27Gig HD). I also have a MOTU 2408 MkII and I am planning on purchasing a 1224 I/O.

I am looking for a hard disk solution (scsi or ide) to get 16 simultaneous tracks.

I'm currently running the 2408 on a g3 233 with a sonnet tempo ata/66 card and a diamondmax plus 40gig (audio only) drive. I am also running audiodesk, but I plan on upgrading to DP.

When tracking I hear tons of crackles and pops, loud enough to distract the musicians, but I do get 8 sim. tracks.

What can I expect when I set up the G4? Was it a processor issue or was it the drive? Am I dreaming to think I will be able to get 16 sim. tracks?

Any help is much appreciated.

Make sure your using the latest PCI 324 driver. Also choose the PCI 324 as your input in the basic audio config not the sound manager. Reduce the buffer size to 512 or 256 and see what happens. By the way if you're running OS 9.1 there is a problem with some sound strip extension. I suggest go back to 9.0.4 the most stable at the moment.

Thanks for the help. I am running 9.1, I wasn't aware of the problems under it.

As for Diigital Performer, I haven't purchased it yet. I am still running the free audiodesk software. I do plan on upgrading before I get into any serious recording. I'm trying to get my act together.

I'll try those changes and hopefully I'll be able to resolve the crackles and pops I'm hearing.

Any insight into what I shoud do for the HD? SCSI or IDE?

If you have the money go for SCSI, if not then spend it on RAM or other upgrades.

I'm also getting a 1224 as core unit though not extension. Still waiting for DP 3.0 they suppose to ship in two weeks. IDE will be enough for 16 tracks, if you want more then 24 then go with SCSI. I'm planning on a full SCSI set up myself. Unlike you I'll be running only 6 tracks at a time, but it will be very stable, the latency will be close to 3ms plus I'll be able to run lots or real time plugs.
