I use the DAW for mixing and mastering multitracked audio and I don't need much, if any, midi support. I have used Pro Tools free on a PC and liked it a lot, but as I am now taking delivery of a new G4 733 MHz, 256Mb RAM, 2 hard discs etc. I would like some thoughts as to the best hardware/software combination to match up with it for my needs.

I need to interface a Fostex D108 via ADAT and hopefully use machine control so that when we go out on location (we record Classical orchestra's and jazz bands etc) we can sync up some extra tracks if required, although most of the time it will be mixing the 8 tracks.

I have thought that a Digidesign 001 would do but I have heard of the 1010, and Logic are also good for this.

Has anyone any views before I go down the shops to get their view?

Peter,

Look into the MOTU equipment. Decent sound card, lots of I/O options, including ADAT. http://www.motu.com
The MOTU stuff is Mac native, a big consideration when choosing a DAW package, i.e. getting one written for your OS platform.
BTW, did you get the Superdrive that authors DVD's? I'd like to know how that works out, as I'm considering it for my video work.

Good luck,

Bob,

Thanks for that I will look. I haven't yet got the gear (on order) but when I do I shall try and remember to let you know how it checks out - give me a reminder in a couple of weeks!

Remember in order to use Pro Tools you need to buy the hardware for it. Yes you should definitely take a look at Motu's stuff especially Digital Performer 3.0 which is much more advanced in the MIDI department then Pro Tools. Also for the money you're going to spend on G4/733 you'd rather buy a dual 533 which is much faster and supported by Digital Performer and Pro Tools.
