Hi, I'm looking to buy a new soundcard to replace my Aardvark Q10 (which is available for sale if anyone is interested, but anyway...), and was considering the Mackie Onyx system with the firewire card. I've never been an outboard mixer guy, but figured that this would be a convenient way to record live shows, using the Mackie for the house mix and running direct into a laptop. So I guess my questions are two fold, first, is this the right system for that sort of thing, or will I be happy with it for both live and studio applications?
Second, Do I really need the 1640, or will the 1620 be enough? As far as I can tell the only difference is the additional two bus, is that correct? What would I do with an additional two bus, this is a simple question, I just really don't know what I would need them for, but since there is a $500 difference, I'm probably overlooking something important.
