View Full Version : Cubase/ProTools problems

Can some kindly soul tell me what I'm doing wrong?

I'm running Pro-Tools III (v4.1.1), and Cubase Audio 4.0 on a Power Computing "Power 100" 100 Mhz Nubus machine, (It's the equivalent of the Mac 8100) - with 112 Meg of RAM, and the OS version of 7.6.1

Both programs run perfectly on their own - when used exclusively, but the computer locks up, and hangs whenever I attempt to load one while the other is already open. I've tried deleting different preferences, turning various extensions on and off, and allocating different sums of memory to Cubase, DAE, and Pro-Tools all to no avail.

My only diagnostic clue is this: with Cubase already open, an attempted opening of Pro-Tools initially goes fine until it launches the DAE. Then it's game over.

At this point, no one at Digi, or Steinberg (Canada) can help me since it's relatively old stuff that I'm using.

I've met the general operating conditions for using both software programs such as disabling appletalk, turning off the virtual memory, and increasing my RAM to what I thought should be adequate for this particular software package.

Excluding the distinctly unhelpful: "gee, why don't you just get a G4" phrase, -can anyone suggest where else I might look for potential conflicts/problems with my setup? Is this a familiar condition for anyone else out there? This is a bit disconcerting since Pro-Tools and Cubase are touted as being quite compatible with one another.

Thanks in advance,

Chris

It is my understanding that only one application can access DAE at any given time, and if both are trying to access it you will have the problem you describe.

The compatibility you mention basically means that Cubase can use DAE as its audio I/O. But if you try to use two applications simultaneously, with both trying to access DAE, you will have no luck.

If you're trying to use Cubase for MIDI applications and Pro Tools for audio you should disable the audio portion of Cubase. I don't know if this is possible, as I'm not a Cubase user, but in Digital Performer, for example, you can select "MIDI Only" allowing another application to run as the audio application.

Hope this helps.

Oh, and, "gee, why don't you just get a G4?" Sorry. Couldn't resist. (I'm running an old 9600 (with a G3 upgrade), so I know what you mean.

Hey, thanks!

As you guessed, I am trying to specialize tasks -having Cubase do MIDI, and ProTools handle audio.
I think it is possible to disable Cubase's audio side upon starting the program. I'll give it a shot and see what happens.
