A list from memory...

You can remove (you should put these in a separate folder somewhere, in case you need them some time down the line...) anything having to do with:
Printing
File Sharing
Networking
Firewire

Those are the basics...

You can start out by selecting the "base" version of the extensions in the extension manager (in the Apple > Control Panels menu). Then you can proceed to remove any printing, ColorSync, InputSprockets, modem or internet connection stuff, and just about any other extensions and control panels that don't sound like they're needed for a stand-alone machine (or aren't features that are supported on your machine). I wouldn't mess with the basic AppleTalk extensions or any shared library extensions.

The ONLY sane way to do this is a few at a time, checking afterward for at least a day to see if the machine acts up or if functions are broken. If something gets weird, reactivate the extensions one at a time until the problem disappears. And definitely use the Extensions Manager, since it just moves the extensions and doesn't erase them. The worst performance hits seem to come from network and internet extensions. Microsoft extensions have always been troublesome, but they're better now - I would still deactivate them. Kodak and Epson drivers are also funky-prone. And don't use any Norton extensions (virus protection or disk saver stuff) - these and other automatic virus protection programs will definitely destabilize your Mac. You can still use the software (including Norton) to scan for viruses - you just want to remove the automatic stuff and do it manually. Other than that, any 3rd-party extensions that affect the finder directly are a bad idea.

It's a slow process, but there's really no other way to pare the extensions and control panels to a minimum, since every machine is a little different in the way it's used. It's a worthwhile thing to do, and after you spend a couple of weeks doing it, your machine will be rock-solid.

In regards to what Bombastique said about removing unneeded extensions, I need printing, internet and all music related items. I'm not on a network. Please tell me what extensions I can get rid of. Incidentally, I see the Kodak things on startup. What does that do? Also, can I if I'm not dealing extensively with graphics, do I need the Quickdraw 3D stuff. Thanks.
