which would be the better way of connecting a rosetta a/d to a pc?

i currently use the rosetta's s/pdif output into the s/pdif input of my soundcard (soundblaster platinum 5.1)

however,

im considering getting a firewire card for my pc, and getting the firewire expansion card for the rosetta

would the firewire connection be better than the s/pdif connection?

i guess im curious if the soundcard has any effect on the s/pdif signal?

ALSO, with the system in the question above.. I currently use ACID as a simple multi-track recorder, (no effects or editing or bouncing) and then burn the tracks as .wavs onto cds which then get imported into pro-tools for mixing

would using a different program like nuendo, samplitude etc, have any sonic effect (different from acid) on the recording of the tracks themselves?

If you're using the Rosetta 200, S/PDIF should be fine and I don't think it would effect the quality any. It's just a format for transferring digital data.
Some may argue of sonic differences of the audio engines used in the different programs as far as playback and handling DSP, but since you are just bouncing the wave files over to Pro Tools .... I wouldn't think it would be of concern.
Acid isn't a true multi-track recorder, in that you could record multiple tracks simultaneously but if you are just doing single tracks at a time ... it should be fine. The largest sonic impact stems from the A/D converters, and you should have that fairly well covered with the Rosetta.
