I'm working on some Harmonies for a tune. In order to sing in the Alto part (I'm a Tenor). I had to transpose the Tenor part down 4 semitones. I did so in Melodyne using the Bridge (worked nicely), Sang in the Alto part last night.

I was editing the two parts together today and I noticed this kind of whinning overtone. Not pronounced enough to make the end result unusable, but not good.

I tried this whole process with the indigenous Cubase audio transposer before and the overtones were really pronounced, making the end result unusable.

What is causing this? There is a formant mode in Melodyne. I don't entirely understand what formant is, but could this be one of the ways of preventing these overtones?

Thanks,

Ian:confused:

Formant is simply the resonance
(filtering) characteristics of
the phonic system wich is relative to mouth shape
etc...
As a simplified example:
transposing formant may sound like a complex
resonant comb-filter sweep.

So could this be causing these overtones?

Yes, that could be the cause.
There are other possible causes
that are related to the inerent
transposition algorythm.
Maybe FFT windowing could cause this prob.
That is beyond my math skills...

The guys at Melodyne suggested playing around with the Formants. I sent them the files in question, and they said they couldn't hear what I was talking about, so it could be one of the "musician ears versus software ears" scenerios.
