hey fellas,

i had just sent out my laptop (Athlon 1.8) to Compaq to be fixed, the power receptacle on the laptop wore over time, so that component had to be replaced. when i got the laptop back blue screens all over the place usually right after i logged in to Windows XP. i kept geting the page_fault_in_a_nonpaged_area blue screen.

so i reseated the RAM, no help. I rebuilt the machine with a clean install of XP, installed SP1, and all the critical updates. and necessary driver that i have used before.

I still come up with the same blue screen, and last night i got 2 new ones...but these happen after running the computer for say 30-60 minutes, along with the non paged area one..
Driver_IRQ_LESS_OR_NOT_EQUAL
afd.sys
STOP: 0x000000D1
and

STOP: 0x0000008E
win32k.sys

i did a bunch of swapping out of memeory sticks ( had sent the 256 to Compaq and kept the 512 at home) i ASSUME both cant be bad at the same time.

i noticed the 256 rang up as "192" in windows,
and the 512 rang up as "448" both in bios and windows, no matter what slot i put them in.

i ran memtest86, and after 10 hours i dont know what the thing was doing, there were reported errors and counting, and failed addresses, but i think it had over ran itself, when i woke up here was somthing like 18000 errors and counting. although im not exactly sure im reading it right.

can anyone shed some light ?

thanks,

Neil

That is all about the RAM or RAM controllor.
If u r sure about ur RAM,try to check the memory setting in the BIOS.Slower it a little bit.
The size of RAM seems smaller because it is shared as Video RAM.It doesnt matter at all.
If the blue screen appears again, reinstall the main board driver.
I guess it must be VIA solution for AMD.So dont forget to install the latest VIA 4 in 1 driver.
Anyway,good luck dude.

man, i cant believ i overlooked that. im goin nuts over here, my DAVW system board got fried, and my laptop in the same week, now my file server is blue screening.

i dont have a VIA chipset, thanks for the heads up though.\

im running memtest86 again on both chips seperatly, i happened to run it again yesterday, and NO errors..

as for my BIOS, it sucks, theres no options at all.

thanks again for the help, ill keep at it

I believe the problem lies in some hardware .The next suspicion is the hard driver on which windows keeps page file as virtual memory.Check ur hard disk or relocate the virtual memory.Let's find what will take place.

hey guys, i finally finished some extensive tests on my memory using the memtest86 utility. i did 80 passes with each stick, in different slots. the results are:

SLOT 1:
256 stick : PASS
512 Stick : PASS

SLOT 2:
256 stick : PASS
512 stick : FAILED @ < 40 passes

and with both slots filled, differnt configs : FAILED

i was hoping to single out whether it was a stick, or whether it was the slot itself, but the results dont really give me a clear answer. is there any way to determine ?

my laptop problem : what do you think of this:

compaq claims that the presario 2100 accepts up to 2x512 sticks.

yet according to the memory tests above, the 512 stick in slot 2 fails, but not in slot 1. my theory is that this mobo really cant map 512 of memory in this slot.

i had sent the laptop away to repaird the power receptacle, and i think when the tech took the ram stick out of the slot, he put it back in a another slot, so when i got it back, i put the 512 stick in, and all hell broke loose. since ive reversed config from when i got it, it hasnt blue screened at all. i swear i remember trying this and gettina blue screen, but my laptops been alright for a week now !
