View Full Version : "safe" operating temp. for a PC?

Hello everyone,

I went to the AMD site, and they said their processor is safe to run up to 85 degrees celcius (184 Farenheit).

this seems really generous! I just installed a freeware program called "Motherboard Monitor", and it's giving me a real-time readout of 125 farenheit system temp, 138 farenheit processor temp.

i thought 140 Farenheit was the safe limit, so i thought i was getting close. but it looks like i have lots of room to spare.

i just built a cabinet structure to house my PC, so i'm watching the temperature carefully.

anybody have a good answer on what a safe temperature for an AMD Athlon 2400+ really is?

if i can just take the AMD site's word for it, then it looks like i'm in great shape. then i can start adding soundproofing inside the cabinet. it's almost silent now. some wrapped 703 and some sonex, and i think i'll be really in quiet land.

I only know that the higher the temp, the lower the lifespan.
So cool it down...

It depends, amd will always have higher temp than intel. And the limit is also higher on amd, so you're in a safe run.

Cool Bubs!

I have been trying to design a silent cabinet as well for my power amps. As far as a silent system I have it down to 20-20db....I would love to see a picture of your silent cab when your done...

You should consider lining it with acoustic matting for ATX cases.. It is sticky back and a limp mass material much like Sheetblock from Auralex with a high STC rating.

I am in the middle of working on a metal case that is suspended by rubber bands like a bowflex. Basicly like a mini room decoupled from the floor but a case that can hold PC parts...

The key is to kill vibration....

There are some killer silent 120mm fans out there that are barely audible you should consider a vent in the back with one of those fans wired from your case power just to keep the air moving otherwise over time the hard drives and everything will fry faster..

Here are some silent options for others that will bring noise way down!

yeah, i'm actually having fun with this.

the neat thing about it, is that it's progressive. i keep adding tricks to it, and then check the temperature.

it's holding steady at about 125/140 farenheit. so i'm going to get gutsy with some more sound proofing, a bit at a time.

it really is quiet right now. but i want it to be inaudible, or at least very, very close to it.

Check out the TNN500a from Zalman, this is silent technology at it's finest!!! kinda spendy but soon to have solid state hard drives and zero noise. I have seen Iso-Rax that are close to this price so in terms of pro-audio gear for your studio it is a pin prick compared to a Pair of U87's and a Avalon Pre...

yeah, i saw that at silentpcreview.com. looks like the future.

but 64 bit only for athlon. no plans to rip out my whole system that's working fine!

something for me in about 2-3 years.

The disk drives will still make some noise. So the only way to use this and have a truely no noise solution would be to use a very expensive solid state "disk drive". So if you can afford to spen $4,000 to $5,000 for a solid state disk drive then it might alse be a good idea to spend $1,200 on a silent case.

If you need silence, put everything in another room
or in a closet.

if you are concerned about your PROCESSOR heat and noise... just buy a Thermaltake Silent... its in LOTS of shops... its more or less cheap (about 30$) and is great... I use an XP3200+ and mantains it in completely silent, in a room about 25-28C, at about 42-45C as much while working. I tested lots of fans out there and believe me... this one is incredible!! (hahahaha... I dont have any interest in Thermaltake trademark, eh!!! XDDDDDDDDDDD)
