I have a PC desktop with an 80G HD with Cubase SX v1 running on Windows XP. I just bought a 250G drive and want to switch to a dual HD setup.

(1) What is the optimum configuration? I'm thinking Windows and nonmusic apps on the original drive, Cubase and VSTi samplers on the new drive. What's the best place to put the samples? I've heard they should not be on the same drive as the samplers. Is it okay to put them on the same drive as the OS?

(2) Do I have to do anything like download something from Microsoft to get my computer to read and adapt to the second drive?

(3) What else should I know?

Thanks in advance to all who answer.

I've just upgraded to a 120gb drive for audio
what I've been told to do is put windows and all other software, even the audio software on the main drive. Then save all audio, and (samples) to your separate drive. When I was having some problems with my chipset, I got advice to arrange the main drive on primary master and the audio on primary slave, put the CD on secondary. But, it didn't really make any difference as my main problem was the chipset, but I still have the audio on primary slave

But.....I now have this new 120gb drive in a removable 5.25 bay on the secondary slave. And,,,, all seems well. I've recorded 3 or so gigs of audio today on the new drive and it's smooth sailing.

go to control panel> administrative tools> computer management> disc management

and you should be able to format and set everything up

u might meet troublesome things while attempting to install a driver more than 137GB.if so,refresh ur MOBO BIOS.

you can also add external Firewire drives if you fill up both IDE channels with HDs and CD/DVD drives. You can also chain them together easily.

WINXP should handle all of it for you fairly easily. Make sure you have the most up to date drivers for everything, including your MOBO and controllers.

For the most part, WINXP will "Find" your hardware and install it for you. Again, make sure you have the most up to date drivers from your manufacturers websites, as well.

Have fun!
