View Full Version : Bogging CEP 2.0

Once again, I'm slogging my program. Getting the "Cool Edit has encountered a problem and needs to close..." window.
I'm using a Celeron 2.0 GHz CPU, with 256 MB of RAM at a 200 FSB. Got CEP, Soundforge 5.0, a demo version of n-Track (came with the FASoft compressor I ordered on disc- oops. I wanted the plug-ins! Didn't need 'em!).
Using a Tascam US-428 as soundcard and controller. Also have Veritas CD/DVD burning software.
Going to up RAM. If that doesn't do it, got to go with an AMD Athlon 3.0 GHz, and a new motherboard, I guess.
Anyone got any advice? Like don't load stuff I don't really need...?
That's good advice, thanks, Rog. ;)
Rog.
The FASoft compressor is quite nice, though! $25, including shipping for the disc- if you don't do credit cards over the 'net.

Celeron systems not generally recommended for DAW's - better Pentium or AMD.

I built an office machine using an Intel D865PE and a Celeron 2.2 with 256MB ram. I was able to test out a Tascam FW1884 on in without problems using Sonar 2.2 last year...
It is not the chip...Even a celeron has the balls to run a ton of stuff without problems..
What is the exact problem?
What motherboard are you using, Ram, hard drives?
This would help us help you....

Hey, allright- thanks for the inquiry.
I get about three minutes into mixing (an ongoing) session, and 'the window' appears: "Cool Edit has encountered a problem and needs to close...". Often, before this happens, the playback in multitrack will beging to bog and stutter- in fact anytime I place much demand on the program, like a Transform, or any signal processing, esp. in the Edit window, the program closes.
This is a pretty recent development, since having the machine's hard-drive wiped out once and re-installed (XP pro) with most of the programs exterraneous attributes left out. (Heh, I'd got a virus. Had to clean house.) The machine has been also rendered internet disabled, in the interest of avoiding further corruption (Apps have been re-installed from CD). Don't know, but maybe that's part of the problem? Should I be using a different platform? Or could I be experiencig a Registry problem?
The machine's not in front of me, but when I boot up, the screen says "Phoenix" w/ a blue logo for the BIOS. I do know it's a Maxtor hard drive, 7200 rpms, I believe it's ATA 100. I'll reconfirm this next time I can get to the library, where I'm currently doing my e-mails.
I'm using 256 MB of DDR RAM, at a 200 FSB, and Celeron 2.0 GHz processor. The guy who made it for me says he's gotten the most bang for the buck out of this system- that it's doing more than it appears it should (by the looks of the CPU) due to the DDR RAM.
I spoke with a TASCAM tech, and he was running CEP, Sonar, Cubase, and other stuff all on an old 'Model T' machine that makes mine look like a rocket. No problems on his system, evidently. Don't know how extensive he was getting with it, though.
I'll come back with all the proper specs tomorrow... I'm in the middle of remodeling my house, and shortly on the way to give some bass lessons,.. then playing a reggae gig tonight. Back to framing the stairwell tomorrow.
This is called: "Family-man gets a hobby"! :D
Thanks for your time and assistance- I'll be back!

Rog., I just got a copy Using Audition by Ron Dobbs from Amazon for about $36 (w shipping). I don't remember if I'd seen you refer to it but it does have some help scattered through its pages w the kinds of things you are describing. I just got it this afternoon so I haven't thoroughly read it yet but it looks pretty good.
I wonder if Adobe Audition might help? I think you can get an upgrade from 2.0 for about $70 (I know, you've got a lot on your plate already) BUT thinking back, after I got my rebuilt machine out of the shop, I installed CEP 2.0 and it would not open and it may have been then that I saw that the "needs to close" message but I had the AA 1.0 upgrade so I didn't worry...until I discovered that my AA .exe no longer worked! I then found a download source for a fresh AA which took OK (AA didn't care whether CEP worked or not, it just wanted to find it installed) and shortly thereafter I upgraded to 1.5. I understand there is a trial version at Adobe's website and you might try it and see what happens. If AA works then you might want to spring for the upgrade.

Hey, lp,
Thanks for the heads-up, and it might indeed work, but due to particulars I'm not going to be going for the upgrade. 'Nuff said... I will aask aaround aabout this on the AA forum, though.
:D
I'm going to try the RAM upgrade, 'cause it's a solid idea anyway, I figure. If that doesn't work, then yeah, I may have to spring for something- but CEP seems to have come into this problem subsequent to changes done to the computer (i.e., hard-drive wipe-out and re-install of Win XP), so maybe it's a stray file or registry issue?
I still have to get the true specs to my machine, but it's just a bad time to try to focus on this. Too much going on at home just now! I'll get back in a day or two on those specs at Dawbox' request. Maybe we can figure this out here in the forum...?
Thanks,
Rog.

Just so's everybody knows.. I am running Adobe Audition on a Celeron and have had zero problems. Even though it's old and slow (500mz, 256 meg ram) I have no trouble running the program. I keep feeling like I should upgrade to a newer faster computer, but since my old workhorse seems to do the job I just can't force myself to spend the thousand hours it takes to re-install sound cards, SCSI drives, plug-in's, etc.
It sounds like there is something else wrong in the computer and not the fact it's a Celeron.

Yeah, allright- that's one of several 'confirmations' that it may be I should leave off with worrying about the processor. But you're running 256 MB... mileage varies?...
I did once load Soundforge, then tried to uninstall Soundforge but keep its' plug-ins in the DirectX menu for Cool Edit. I went and tried to organize the individual files manually. It was late...:D ! (I wouldn't have given that away in public, but I'm way over taking myself very seriously at this point!) When the new RAM chip (512, finally) goes in, we'll wipe the disc clean, re-install XP, optimize, and get back to the test ramp.
Then I suppose I'd better post some kind of mp3 formatted results from all this, so all the friendly advice I've caused people to take the time for won't appear wasted! It'll be good for "gas"...:p
So I'm going with the "It's not the Celeron" theory. Thanks for the light, everyone!

GZ,
What, if you don't mind, are the specs on your computer? Aside from what you mentioned, I mean. And did you upgrade from Cool Edit, or did you buy AA from the get-go?
I do not undersand why, if you're pedaling a bike (your computer- no offence!), you're going a greater distance than me in my Ford Escort LX (my computer- right!)... Could it be that it's Cool Edit Pro 2 causing the trouble? And it could well be another issue, but this trouble of mine started happening even before I had the computer serviced and re-booted w/ a stripped-down Win_XP. I looked in the system information of my machine, and I've hanged or faulted the program 17 times- and I'm not on this thing every night!
lp deluxe is running 512 MBw/ Audition (right?), and I'm (still!) running 256 (DDR) w/ CEP- but I'm right between you guys as far as specs, and having trouble. Is it CEP?
