Ok this is a problem that has been bugging me for a long time and again I can't narrow down what it is.

After a period of time my XP installation goes from running perfectly to doing something strange.

Everytime I log into windows and it's about to load the desktop it takes around 30 seconds for the desktop to kick in. There is no disk or apparent activity, it's like it's pausing. I presume it's not hardware as it doesn't happen to my second installation at the same, but the second installation usually goes the same way.

I've checked and deleted any programs that startup in the registry and the usuall startup places but this still happens.

any ideas?

list all your other hardware including make and brand of ram plus speed of chip ect.

is this a fresh install or a update/upgrade disc from 98/xp?

when installing did you pull all PCI cards so that when XP loads it has a clean slate?

How is the master slave setup?

What VGA card?

hmmm i'll take a look sometime but the fact the problem doesn't seem to appear on the 2nd installation of xp (dual boot) makes me thing the probem is software and not hardware related.

i will run bootvis and tell you what happens as i did this before i long time ago and came to no conclusion that i can remember now. i do remember that the boot was stopping on a particular dll file that was integrated into windows so there was nothing that i could do myself, but i will rereport it here.
